How to split trip expenses with friends
A trip is the hardest kind of shared spending to keep straight: several people paying for many things, often in a currency nobody thinks in, sometimes with no signal. Here is a way of doing it that holds up — and how OweMe, a free app for iPhone and Android, handles each part.
Before you go: one group for the trip
Make a group named after the trip and invite everyone with a link or a QR code. Anything paid before you leave — flights, the flat — goes in first. Whoever booked the accommodation is usually owed the most from day one. That is fine; it all nets out at the end.
On the trip: write it down when you pay
The habit that matters is recording each expense when it is paid, by whoever paid it: what it was, how much, who paid and who it was for. Thirty seconds at the table beats an hour of reconstruction on the last night.
- Most things split equally.
- Not everyone at the dinner? Split it only between the people who were there.
- One person had the expensive menu? Use exact amounts or shares.
- Two people paid one bill between them? Record both payers on the same expense.
Receipts. OweMe can read a printed receipt with your phone's camera and suggest the items, so you only tap who had what. The receipt is read on the phone itself; the photo is not uploaded anywhere. The free plan includes three scans a month.
Different currencies
The currency is set per expense, so a trip through two countries can mix euros and pounds without anybody converting at the table. OweMe then shows a balance per currency, because the rate you convert at decides who owes what — and that should be your choice, not the app's. If you would rather see one total, Premium lets you set a rate for the group and shows a single combined figure, labelled as your rate.
No signal
With Premium, OweMe works offline: you can read your balances and add or edit expenses with no connection, and it syncs when you are back. For one trip there is a cheaper option — upgrade just that group with a single payment. For 90 days everyone in it gets offline use, currency conversion and unlimited receipt scans, and it never renews.
At the end: settle in the fewest payments
On the last night, everybody does not need to pay everybody. OweMe nets every expense against every other one and lists the fewest payments that clear the group. For four people that is often three payments instead of six — the worked example shows exactly how.
Pay each other however you normally do — OweMe never moves money — then tap Mark paid. The person you paid confirms it.
What did the trip actually cost?
Balances only say who owes who. OweMe also keeps the trip's total and, for each person, what they paid and what their share came to — the number you want when somebody asks "so how much was that weekend, in the end?"
